As we all know Google took a big leap forward when it integrated google chat right into google email. Then came the abilities to have a video chat and a voice conference call right from within your google mail.

While this was an impressive integration by all account it had the same limitation that all the other voice chat softwares have – the inability to call actual phones.

However now you can call actual phones right from within your googlemail chat window! Even more amazingly all calls to US phones are FREE at least for the remainder of this year. As for the other countries Google has released their very low rate card.

Here are the details

Here are Google’s call rate to other countries – Rate Card

Dialling a phone works just like normal phone. Just call “Call phone” at the top of your chat list and dial a number or enter a contact’s name

Windows 7 Laptops – Enabling Internet Search

by admin — Categories: Windows 7 — Tags: 4 Comments

One of the cool things about Windows Vista and Windows 7 is the ability to search for files or programs by typing a few characters in the start menu which springs up when one clicks the shiny Windows orb on the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

This is the default view you get when you search for something

Windows 7 search

No internet search option

While this is brilliant way to get to the needed file and programs, what is missing is the ability to be able to search the whole internet by typing into the same box. Fortunately we can change this fairly easily. This post will show you how to!

Adding Internet Search to Windows 7

Step 1

Begin by clicking the Windows orb and type gpedit.msc as shown in below picture

Step2

Step 2

Clicking the Group Policy Editor (or gpedit.msc) from Step 2 will open up the following Window. When this loads, navigate to the folder

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar

Windows 7- Load Group Policy Editor

Load up the Group Policy Editor

Double-click the Add Search Internet Link to Start Menu entry to get to the proper configuration screen. This will bring up the picture in the following step.

Step 3

This is the screen you should be seeing after following steps 1 and 2.

Windows 7 -Enable Internet Search here

click Enabled

Click the option marked “Enable” and then click the OK button.

All Done!

Now if you click the Windows orb again and type something, you should see the option to conduct internet search. It is so amazingly simple to bring the power of Internet Search right from within your Windows 7 Laptop’s start menu!

Step5

Internet Search Available!

Criticial – Microsoft Issues Emergency patch for Critical Windows Flaw

by admin — Categories: Microsoft, Security, Windows — Tags: , , 2 Comments

Microsoft issued an out of schedule patch last night which patches a critical vulnerability in all versions of Windows. The company did not identify which exact flaw is being patched but the description of the flaw is a close match to the LNK flaw which attackers have been exploiting for several weeks.

Please make sure you run Windows Update on your laptops and PCs and download this critical update. Without this update installed your laptop is open for remote control by attackers. Contrary to popular myth if your laptop or PC has been compromised by an attacker, there will be NO apparent visible change in your laptop or PC. When compromised your Laptop or PC will most likely be exploited by the attacker as a part of a “bot net” when you are not using it.

If you would like any further advise or help on how to keep your system updated using Windows Update please write to us at fixit@BritishPcRepairs.co.uk
